University of Colorado Denver expands bioengineering program

"The two newest research buildings on Anschutz Medical Campus boast about 600,000 to 700,000 square feet of laboratory space, much of which is utilized by the bioengineering department. Adjacent to campus is an incubator site for biotech businesses, many of which either evolved out of student or faculty research projects or located to the area to tap into the available wealth of intellectual resources.
Mark Spiecker is CEO of Sharklet Technologies — one of the 39 biotech companies currently utilizing that incubator site, Colorado Science + Technology Park at Fitzsimons — and serves on the executive committee of The Colorado BioScience Institute, a nonprofit formed to provide education and resources for all players in the biotech industry.
'The Colorado bioscience industry has outpaced the national industry by, I believe, about 5 percent over the last year. We haven't just survived — we've thrived,' he said. 'So having a feeder pool of people like that is going to be very helpful as we try to grow biotech even more here in Colorado.'"
